Behold, my latest obsession...only cheaper. First off, pitaya bowls, acai bowls, fruit smoothies, pressed juices, all these trending natural foods are so great for your body. The only downside to all this fruity/veggie goodies is that they are expensive. Fear no more, making your own fruit goodies at home is easy as pie and it will save you a fortune. Since I love to eat acai bowls and pitaya bowls more than I like to drink $10 pressed juices, I decided to buy ingredients to make my own acai and pitaya bowls.
I've been experiencing with making my own acai bowls at home for a while now. I've always had trouble with getting a good acai texture/consistency. To my surprise, making my first pitaya bowl was a lot easier. The consistency was thicker and stickier so that helped a lot. So the acai and pitaya are two different kinds of fruits. Acai berries are loaded with antioxidants. They are from Central and South America. Pitaya, or commonly known as dragon fruit, is a tropical fruit and there are actually two different kinds of pitaya. One from Central America and another from Asia. (My avocado toast post pictures pitaya from Asia...or actually from my backyard). The main difference is that when you cut open a pitaya from Asia, the meat is white. When you cut open a pitaya from Asia, you will notice a bright and vibrant magenta color.
Anyway, these fruit bowls are amazing good! So healthy and so refreshing! Tons of antioxidants from the acai, vitamins from all the fruits, mmm, you just can't go wrong. Ditch your ice cream or frozen yogurt and eat one of these babies instead! The best part about these acai and pitaya bowls is that you can add whatever you like to it! Don't be afraid to get creative.

1. I purchased my Pitaya Plus packs at Whole Foods for $7.99. They came in a pack of 4 which makes two decent size pitaya bowls. Of course, you can make 4 servings with the 4 packs and share with family and friends but who likes to share...? You can also find acai smoothie packs at Whole Foods as well for about $6-7. The brand is Sambazon.
2. To thaw, run it in water for about 5 seconds. While the pitaya is still in its pack, crush it so it will be easier to blend. Slice your banana (you can use 1 whole or 1/2 depending on how much you like bananas) and toss into blender. Add pitaya packs and 1 cup of soy milk. You can use other liquids like apple juice, almond milk, etc. Blend until the contents are smooth but not liquidy! It's very important your pitaya is not liquidy because then you've got yourself a smoothie. P.S. don't add ice! Ice will melt and make your pitaya even more liquidy! (Is "liquidy" a word?)
3. Pour your pitaya in your most favorite bowl and decorate with your choice of fruits! You can use all kinds of fruits: raspberries, kiwis, mango...you name it. Feel free to get creative and add whatever you want!
4. Lastly, drizzle some agave on top for natural sweetness!
Enjoy! xx
